Maryam Raeesdana

WRITER, POET, TRANSLATOR

Maryam Raeesdana was born in Tehran, Iran on Dec. 11, 1967. She grew up in the cities of Abadan, Busher and Tehran.
She received her undergraduate degree from The Azad University Foreign Language, Tehran/ Iran in 1997, majoring in French language and Translation.
Maryam Raeesdana has been active as a writer, poet, translator, journalist, and critic in the literary world of Iran since 1989.
Publication of her first three books “Forgotten writings of Sadegh Hedayat”,
“Viewpoints and Critiques on Hedayat”, and “Assessment of Sadegh Hadayat works and ideas” anticipated few years of delay. Other literary works of Maryam in the field of short story, poetry, and translation have been published in Iran. Since her short stories’ collection, “Passage”, which was first published in 2003, some of her books did not find the prospect to get published because of censorship such as Matalak Patalak, in genre of satire which was later published by Amazon U.S.A in 2015. Translation of “The Lost Time”, poems of French poet Jacques Prevert, including his biography, artistic and political timeline is another of her works. Maryam’s most recent work “Sayeh Asoorik”, a book of her poetry, was published in Iran, in 2018.
Two of her stories “An Island in The Heart of The Greater Tehran” and “The Sound Of A” received respectively the first and third prize of “Sadegh Hedayat Prize” and “Isfehan Short Stories Festival” in 2003 and 2002. Unfortunately, up until today, after 16 years, “An Island…” has not received the official’s permission for publication in Iran.

Maryam has immigrated twice; in 2006 from Tehran to Paris, France and on 2010 from Paris to California, United States.
